The Mixto Cuisine
Tucked into the heart of Libertyville at 147 N Milwaukee Ave, The Mixto Cuisine brings a burst of Latin fusion to the local dining scene that’s equal parts vibrant, approachable, and flavor-forward. As someone who’s spent years exploring restaurants and analyzing culinary trends, I can say that this spot does more than just check boxes—it crafts a dining experience that’s casual, cozy, and packed with personality.
One of the first things that jumps out about The Mixto Cuisine is the diversity on the menu. True to its name, it blends influences from across Latin America with American comfort food and healthy options. Whether you’re there for a hearty brunch, a quick lunch bite, or a flavorful dinner, this place offers a little something for everyone. The small plates are ideal for sharing, but if you're like me and struggle with sharing when the food’s this good, go ahead and order a couple just for yourself.
Their breakfast and brunch service is especially worth noting. You’ll find options like tropical fruit bowls, chilaquiles, arepas, or Latin-style omelets made with fresh ingredients and bright, bold seasonings. These dishes are thoughtfully prepared and plated in a way that invites both your appetite and your camera. And for those who lean toward healthier choices, there are plenty of lighter plates available, from grilled proteins with vegetables to fresh salads with house-made dressings.
As the day moves on, the menu leans into its comfort food vibe while keeping the Latin roots front and center. Think mojo pork, ropa vieja, chimichurri steak, or Cuban sandwiches stacked just right. The flavor combinations are layered and intentional, never overpowering but always satisfying. Their cocktail game is strong, too—with house specials and classics that pair beautifully with the dishes. There’s also a solid beer and wine list, and for non-drinkers, they serve quality coffee, including bold espressos and smooth lattes.
From a service perspective, The Mixto Cuisine gets high marks for speed and hospitality. They’re known for fast service, even during busy hours. Staff are welcoming, quick to offer suggestions, and always accommodating when it comes to dietary needs or special requests. I’ve seen them go out of their way to help guests find the perfect dish or tweak a plate to suit allergies.
The space itself is casual and inviting, with a layout that works well for both solo diners and groups. Whether you’re grabbing a quiet table by yourself or gathering friends for an evening out, the ambiance supports it all. Outdoor seating is available and pet-friendly, which is a thoughtful bonus for dog owners enjoying a nice day out. Inside, high chairs and a kids’ menu make the restaurant welcoming for families, while the relaxed but modern decor keeps it feeling fresh.
Accessibility is another strength. From the wheelchair-accessible entrance and toilets to a well-designed layout that avoids tight spaces, the space is inclusive and comfortable for everyone. Parking is rarely a hassle—between free street parking and a generous parking lot, you’re covered even on busier nights.
If you're in Libertyville and looking for a spot that nails the intersection of comfort food and global flavor, The Mixto Cuisine delivers. You can dine in, grab a quick takeout, or get your meal delivered without sacrificing quality. They even offer catering, which makes sense—once you try their dishes, you’ll want to share them at your next event. Plus, they're open every day except Tuesday, with hours running from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM (and until 8:00 PM on Sundays), so they easily fit into most people’s schedules.
For a neighborhood restaurant, it punches above its weight in both flavor and execution, all while staying true to a laid-back, community-first vibe that keeps people coming back.
The Mixto Cuisine Reviews
I am still learning the full palate of the menu offered. I can tell you the house burger and the salad menu are fantastic. Excellent burger. Nice that is comes with the option of sweet potato fries at the same price. The salads are fresh. Made with choice ingredients throughout the salad. It's not just lettuce with some things on top. Lovely homemade dressing. Oh yea, and the breakfast burrito is one of my favorites I ever had. Excellent homemade salsa/hot sauce served along with it. Portion enough to satisfy a hungry belly. Or enough to split between 2 meals. Super friendly people working every time I have been in. Highly recommend this somewhat hidden gem!
Mixto cuisine continues to excel and serve up the most delicious food. (And soup!) The Mixto family really truly cares about its customer service and quality of what they serve. A gem in Libertyville!
Gloomy and pouring buckets outside, but inside Mixto it was bright and cheery with pretty tile-topped tables and friendly staff. We came in during brunch, so the menu reflected both breakfast and lunch items. Some of us ordered a Greek omelet, a smash burger with sweet potato fries, and a grilled chicken sandwich. I ordered a Cobb salad with grilled salmon-- the greens were fresh, the bacon bits were extra crispy, and the salmon was cooked perfectly with a whole sliced egg. This was a generous, colorful, filling entree sized salad. My friend had a cup of tasty tortilla soup and also enjoyed the chicken tostadas topped with lots of fresh avocado and accompanied by a green side salad. This was a cozy family restaurant that takes pride in showcasing quality ingredients and providing tasty food with good value. They were friendly and accommodating. I hope to return to try the dinner entrees.
The Mixto has the locals raving, and I can see why. It's a beautiful space with great service and great food. I started my meal with a cup of beef and barley soup (their soup of the day). I only like beef and barley when it's done particularly well and this was a great one! I could do without the mushrooms but it was good enough for me to ignore them. We were given the brunch menu, which contains breakfast and lunch items, however, breakfast wasn't actually still being served. It was about 3:30 but they don't start prepping for dinner until around that time so be aware that if you want access to the full dinner menu you should arrive no earlier than 4pm. So from the lunch menu I decided to go with the mango habanero crispy chicken sandwich. I was asked if I wanted the sauce to be more mild or more spicy, which is always smart to ask/offer, but I like it hot so bring on the spice! It was a solid sandwich, well breaded and not dry at all. The sauce didn't burn much at first, but the heat built up as I ate. It was never too much for me but it did clear up my sinuses. The sandwich came with my choice of side so I opted for sweet potato fries. These were just ok, I'd probably try a different side next time. I asked about dessert and the coconut yogurt cake caught my attention. Think of a cheesecake but made with yogurt instead. This was a perfect finish! Smooth and creamy, light and tasty, all topped with some fresh strawberries. I think the menu rotates here seasonally, but I'd say it's a must try if they've got it available. Our server was friendly and patient, and even brought me the dinner menu and said she'd ask the cooks if they were ready to prepare anything I was interested in. The price point to quality ratio is a value in my perspective. I would have expected the bill to be about 20 dollars more than what I paid, so you can get a real quality meal without hurting your wallet. I'll definitely be back!
We had another enjoyable meal yesterday at Mixto Cuisine. We started off with their excellent Tortilla soup - they also offered homemade chili. My husband enjoyed their delicious Cubano sandwich and I had the excellent grilled fish tacos served with black beans mixed with corn kernels and tasty rice. Their green salsa added even more flavor. In addition to great food items in a beautiful inviting restaurant, the caring service from this family owned business warms the heart too. Go and Enjoy.
